Downtown McKinney has something for everyone! The historic downtown square is one of the oldest of its kind in Texas. I’ve lived in McKinney for four years now and I know I still have so much to see! If you’re not sure where to start, consider this post a starting point of family-friendly things to do in McKinney town square.
Kid-Friendly Things to Do in Downtown McKinney
First off, head to Spoons Cafe and start your adventure with the most important meal of the day. Serving breakfast all day, it’s sure to start your day of downtown McKinney sights off right.
From there, take a walk around the square and make your way to the Roy and Helen Hall Library. Especially in the summer, this is a cool (literally and figuratively!) place to explore. A wide selection of books and a separate room with games and activities for kids makes it a perfect place to spend some quiet time. Depending on your visit, you might be able to catch a summer activity or daily program.
Next, if you’re feeling creative, you can make your way down the street to Walls of Clay, a paint-your-own-pottery studio to stretch your creative muscles. With everything from figurines, to plates and mugs, to home decor, everyone will find something to make their own. Paint your pottery, leave it with them, and a week or so later you’ll be able to pick it up and take it home! As a side note, we did a birthday party there with my 10-year-old last year and we were very happy with the results!
Finally, we can never go to the square without a request to stop at “the candy store.” Mom and Popcorn is a family favorite. My husband and I love the popcorn (try the Snickerdoodle and/or the Cookies and Cream, and thank me later) and the kids love the candy. A wall of candy, a huge variety of saltwater taffy, and lots of other classic candies, I guarantee that there is something for everyone!
If, after this adventure, you are hungry for lunch, there is no shortage of places to try! Local Yocal BBQ and Grill is a favorite of ours. Or if pizza is a fave, try out Cadillac Pizza. Whatever sounds good to you, you are likely to find it.
Now after all of that fun, it’s time to head home for naps and quiet time. Call that babysitter and get ready to head back out for date night.
