It’s berry-picking, outdoor-eating, sun-shining-bright season in the state of Texas; the perfect time of year for day trips! This is one of my favorite times of year because the produce is sweet, perfectly ripe, and so delicious.
But, local berry-picking farms are also in need of your support!
While putting this list together, I came across many berry picking farms that have shut their doors, and it’s such a loss for our community.
I’ve made a list with four day trips to various farms near Collin County to get you and your family outdoors for some food and fun!
1. Sunset Trail Farm | McKinney
2. Bloomer’s Garden & Wildflower Farm | Sadler
Formerly Wild Berry Farm (same folks, new name). It’s pivoted mostly to pick-your-own flowers with a huge selection of sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, and more. It also has a small amount of you-pick blackberries and blueberries available mid-June. There are goats, sheep, chickens, and a play area for kids. Don’t miss the giant sunflower patch (10 to 15 feet tall)! Be sure to check its website for crop updates and what days it is open as it tends to vary. $6 per person entrance, children two and under free.
3. Blase Family Farm | Rockwall
The bushes bloomed early this season! Blueberry picking will open soon, at $5.25 per pint picked. Visit Facebook or Instagram to find out when you’re good to go.
4. Echo Springs Blueberry Farm | Brownsboro
As of May 2, 2023, the farm expects to be open daily starting in late May. The farm has 75 acres of blueberries and 12 acres of blackberries. It supplies the picking basket and bags to bring your berries home. No reservations needed.
5. Ham Orchards | Terrell
As of May 8, 2023: Peaches and blackberries have not yet ripened, but picking season is expected to begin mid-May. Note: For safety reasons, Ham Orchards doesn’t let you pick your own peaches, but you can buy plenty of freshly-picked ones in the country store. Blackberries are you-pick. Open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., including the store. BBQ is available for purchase, along with peaches, ice cream, jams, baked goods, and more. Season ends in mid-August.
6. Blackland Berry Farm | Royce City
Pick your own blueberries at this pesticide-free farm. It expects to be open for picking the first weekend in June. Treat the kids to something icy from the shaved ice stand while you’re there. Flavors are made with real sugar, no corn syrup or artificial flavors or coloring. Be sure to check the link before you go to make sure it’s open. (Also in Royce City, pick your own blackberries at Oneal Berry Farm.)
7. Blueberry Hill Farms | Edom
As of May 8, 2023: Opening for picking on Friday, May 26! From mid-May – July, open every day from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. — even on holidays! It has a “ready-to-pick” scale on its website for blackberries and blueberries. The country store and bakery sell berry-based preserves, pies, muffins, lemonade, and more. Keep in mind that berry picking season ends July 31.
8. Pure Land Farm | McKinney
Open mid-May to mid-July. Admission is $5 per person. You have to book your spot in advance — it’s one spot per person, excluding babies under the age of one. It has berries, onions, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and much more. Pure Land does not use synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or other additives. For other questions, check out the FAQ!
What to Bring When Going Berry Picking
- Sunscreen and bug spray!
- Hats
- Cooling devices (hand-held fan, wet wipes, cool washcloths)
- Cooler to transport your produce home
- Close-toed shoes
- Plenty of water
