Where to Go Skating in Collin County

Do you remember the days of roller skating under a disco ball while belting out Celine Dion’s greatest hits? How about roller blading while doing the limbo, or ice skating while clinging to the walls? That last one may just be me. Skating is a great recreational activity for the family.

Whether you’re looking for somewhere to practice a triple axel, have a fun family night, or enroll your kid in lessons, here are the best places in Collin County to go ice skating, roller blading, and roller skating.

Ice Skating

Allen Community Ice Rink :: Allen :: Part of Allen’s Parks and Recreation department, this full-size ice rink has a lot to offer. Learn-to-skate classes are offered for ages three to adult. The rink schedule includes freestyle skate, open skate, homeschool skate, adult skate, stick time, and more. The facility also has a Pro Shop, skate sharpening service, skate rentals, off-ice training areas, and offers birthday party rentals!

StarCenter :: Frisco, McKinney, Plano, and Richardson :: The Dallas Stars’ skating centers offer open skate times for youth hockey, figure skating, public skating, and homeschool groups. Skate rentals are available. These community gems utilize Learn to Skate USA curriculum, and even offer programs such as adaptive skating, camps, and parent and child classes. They periodically offer free skating and hockey clinics for newbies, so keep a lookout for those, too.

Roller Blading & Roller Skating

Thunderbird Roller Rink :: Plano :: Roll on over for skate lessons, adult skate sessions, parties, and open skate on the weekends. Homeschool skates are offered monthly, as well. Bring your own skates, or rent quad or inline skates for a small fee. This local, family-owned business is budget friendly and sure to delight.

Skate Parks

There is no shortage of great skate parks in Collin County for inline skating. These are best for teenagers and adults due to the varied terrain, and the fact that they are shared with BMX bikes, skateboards, and scooters. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and protective gear is highly recommended. A simple Google search will find your closest location, but below is one that offers a bit more for families:

The Edge Skate Park :: Allen :: Belonging to the City of Allen, this FREE skate park is one of the largest in Texas. It is best for older kids. Don’t forget their protective gear! Roller skating lessons are available for ages five and up with payment. There is a free indoor facility with a lounge area, pool table, foosball, and video games for ages 10 – 17. They also have two full-size hockey rinks, although Allen Sports Association gets priority use, so call ahead to check availability.
