Is It Time for a Tummy Tuck?

Congratulations! You are a mommy! While you may proudly display that “Baby on Board” sticker on your back windshield, and provide minute-by-minute updates about your child on Facebook, one place you may not love the constant advertisement that you recently had a baby, is on your BODY. We all know the importance of a good diet and exercise during pregnancy, and that it requires hard work to get your body back in shape after you give birth. But what if you’ve done everything you can and you STILL have loose, saggy skin, or stubborn fat pockets?

Sometimes it’s a matter of just having a little extra skin left around your middle after having kids. Or it could be that you’re left with lots of stretch marks post delivery, even with all that religious cocoa butter/oil application. Or worse yet, you could have a more serious condition known as diastasis recti, where the abdominal muscles permanently and painfully weaken or separate due to pregnancy. In any case, typically the most effective treatment for these conditions is a surgical abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck.”

What is a Tummy Tuck?

What exactly is a tummy tuck?  The typical abdominoplasty procedure starts with a lateral incision just above the pubic area, usually low enough to be covered by a swimsuit or underwear. A second incision can be made if there is loose skin above the navel as well. Excess skin is removed, and when possible, skin containing stretch marks is removed as well. Liposuction can be used in combination to remove any excess fat left in the area. The remaining abdominal skin is pulled down and stitched to the underlying muscle to tighten the area. The navel is then repositioned through an incision in the skin.

Is a Tummy Tuck Right for You?

How do you know if you should get one? Enter the expert plastic surgeons at Regional Plastic Surgery Center. Their six surgeons, Dr. Denton Watumull, Dr. Bruce Byrne, Dr. Joshua Lemmon, Dr. Derek Rapp, Dr. Chase Derrick, and Dr. Chirag Mehta, are all Plastic Surgeons. When making any decision about any surgical procedure, you want to make sure you are in great hands. Experience MATTERS. It’s important to check the credentials of your surgeon because not all cosmetic surgeons are plastic surgeons. Did you know that any doctor (an ENT or OB/GYN, etc.) can perform cosmetic surgery? Some doctors only take a weekend course to become a cosmetic surgeon. Only plastic surgeons are trained for safety on ALL parts of the body and face. All of the expert surgeons at Regional Plastic Surgery Center have completed at least six years of general surgery and plastic surgery residencies. RPSC is proud to be celebrating its 27th anniversary this year, and with 6 local offices, RPSC is convenient and easy to find no matter where you live in the metroplex!
