More than any other question, moms ask us about education choices. The options can be overwhelming! To help get you started in the decision-making process, we’ve compiled a list of public and charter schools in the Collin County area.
The public and charter schools included in this guide have two things in common: They are both free to attend and require you to apply. Students will need to apply for acceptance, which is determined by lottery (and in some high school cases, an interview).
But what makes them different:
Public schools of choice use the following terms to differentiate from traditional schools: Magnet, vanguard, language immersion, talented and gifted, STEAM/STEM, transformation schools, etc. A magnet school is a school that uses some sort of selective criteria (e.g., student grades, audition, interview, portfolio) for enrollment determinations.
Oftentimes, they offer college credit and/or innovative courses of study covering a variety of student interests and learning styles.
If your district offers such opportunities, you’ll need to apply for admission. Make sure to check for the different requirements and deadlines, as they vary by school.
Charter schools are public schools that operate independently of the public school system. They are generally more flexible than traditional public schools, and are more like the schools of choice mentioned above.
