4 Ways I’m Upping My Style Game This Summer

Summer in Texas is here and it’s hot. This is obviously no surprise, but somehow it hits me like a ton of bricks every year. Last summer in the middle of a global pandemic while I was hugely pregnant with my second child, I decided that I was finished with my “mom closet.” My athletic shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops were my everyday look. Maybe it had something to do with not being able to go hardly anywhere that required “dressing up” due to the pandemic or maybe it was because I was so pregnant, I just decided that I had had enough of not feeling good about how I was dressed most days. That’s why I decided to pursue an more elevated “mom style” for summer and beyond.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love my athletic shorts and t-shirts, I just decided that I was finished with them for everyday use. They still get plenty of love on cleaning and home improvement/project days. Style is unique to each person and not everyone will want to change up their uniform which is totally okay, this is just what worked for me. I never wear makeup when I’m around the house and rarely do it when I go out for errands. That part has not changed for me, though I do have friends who wear a full face of makeup every day whether they are going anywhere or not.

My 4 Summer Style Essentials

Dresses

Dresses have always been a favorite of mine, but after I gave up my running shorts and t-shirts, I realized that I had a bunch of comfy dresses that I was hoarding for unknown future occasions. If 2020 taught me anything, it was to wear the dang dress! In the summer heat, dresses help me feeler cooler, so I wear them a lot. A few favs of mine are this house dress from Amazon and this Mexican embroidered one from Leos Imports, a boutique located right here in Texas. I have also found a bunch of fun “house dresses” at local thrift stores.

Two of my fav comfy dresses. The Leos Imports one (Left) and the Amazon one (Right).
Drawstring Pants

Where have these shorts and pants been my whole life?! These are so comfy and so versatile. I usually wear these pants around the house with a colorful shirt tied in a knot on the side. This is still the same level of comfort as my running shorts and old baggy t-shirts but the look is much cuter. I love that these pants can be dressed up or down, too. Walmart has a couple of great choices, and I would recommend both their pants and shorts with drawstrings. These are so in right now that you can find them just about anywhere.

These are some of my favorite drawstring pants, perfect for a trip to Six Flags!
Bodysuits

These are a definite love or hate item. I personally love them. They are comfortable and can be worn with shorts, jeans, skirts, etc. I love how easy it is to mix and match them and how well they stay tucked into your bottoms. Again, you can find these just about anywhere right now since they’re so in style.

Hats

I love a good hat. They hide hair that hasn’t had time for a shower and make a statement all at once. A total win-win. I have a decent collection of felt hats that make any simple outfit complete and look unique.

The key for me has been comfort, but not look like I’m about to go for a run…I don’t want people to think I’m that cool! Ha. What items do you grab when it’s time to elevate your mom style?
