What comes to mind when you hear the word “science”? If you’re a child of the 80s like me, it may bring to mind white lab coats, the dreaded Periodic Table, or instruments like telescopes. But ask a child under 10 what they think of when they hear the word science (or STEAM as it’s often called) today, and you’ll get a very different response.
When my kids think of STEAM, they think of building. Or of technology. Or of pumpkins erupting due to a chemical reaction.
That’s why I’m so excited to introduce you to Club SciKidz today.
21ST CENTURY SCIENCE
Science has come a long way in the last 30 years. I’ll never forget the day my preschool director asked me if I’d like to move from a 3s teacher to teach…yep, science. I learned a lot those two years, but at its heart, science is simply this: cultivating curiosity in our children about the world around them.
As a teacher and a mom, I believe it’s important for children to learn how to ask questions, to not just accept status quo. Then, they need to learn how to take the steps to investigate and find answers to those questions…beyond just relying on Google. They need to get their hands dirty.
CLUB SCIKIDZ DALLAS WANTS TO HELP
Serving families in the Dallas, Addison, and (new this year!) Plano areas, Club SciKidz offers full-day camps for children ages 4-13 beginning June 15. For Collin County families, Club SciKidz will be conveniently located at One Community Church in Plano, a fantastic and easy location for commuters. For older kids and young teens, Club SciKidz offers technology-based projects like Robotics and Video Game Creation, real-life themes like Veterinary Medicine and Junior Surgeon, and even science-fiction themes like Magical & Mystical.
Since 1997, owners Bob and Sue Hagan have been running Club SciKidz. They have been bringing the very best science camps to the Dallas area since 2009. Over 100,000 children have attended their camps over the last two decades!
