Teaching Kindness & Respect :: “Shh! I Have a Plan” at Eisemann Center

The Eisemann Center has a new family show coming out that I think our kids are going to love! Shh! I Have a Plan is a purely nonverbal production demonstrating both kindness and respect. Yes, a play without words, which is meant to tell a story purely through imagery.

    Well, this is exciting!

    Storytelling Through Imagery

Chris Houghten, the illustrator who wrote this original children’s book, did so as a way to engage young children in storytelling through images. Making this small book into a children’s play then, can seem all that more wondrous and phenomenal when you learn that he used only 103 words in the entire book, and 10 of them were “Shhh!”

This cute show is one part kid drama and one party comedy, and is just one in an array of the Family Theater Series the Eisemann Center puts on each season. Using magic, music, and puppetry, and all based on the book without many words, Shh! I Have a Plan is a delightful journey of a family who adventures into the woods. There, they concoct a plan to capture a beautiful bird perched in a tree. Does the bird need to be captured? Is it in danger? Will they capture it? And what will happen when they do?

    The Eisemann Has a Mission

As with all Eisemann family shows, there is a mission to teach kids some fundamental concepts in this one. The family members in this play will learn kindness and respect above getting what you want at any cost. Amazingly, the idea of teaching through just actions is both simple and profound. There is a language we wish to impart to our children always, and even better if they can learn through action and what they witness as opposed to just what they hear. This book and play imply, simply and honestly, that kindness and respect are a universal language which crosses all cultures and barriers. As Moms, this is definitely a message we want for our own children!

Come see the show on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Hill Performance Hall at The Eisemann Center. Tickets are on sale now, and for as little as $12, you won’t want to miss this engaging, delightful play with your young kids.

Jennifer Slingerland Ryan knows a thing or two about kids and families. First, she knows they are joyous, exhilarating, loving, and so darn fun. Second, she knows they suck your life dry and make you weep like a baby. By day, she’s a psychotherapist; by night she’s a mom and wife. She claims to love therapizing couples, educating parents, reading dystopian fiction, and sleeping in her free time (read: she never sleeps). Jennifer is a mom of twins. Most days you can find her in her office seeing clients, doing laundry, loading or unloading the dishwasher, or catching up on the latest episode of Real Housewives of (insert city here), Walking Dead, or This Is Us. She is a tree-hugging country girl from West Texas who reads, writes, and teaches about human development and families as a hobby and profession.
