Ready for some inexpensive, do-it-yourself, homemade skin care ideas? I’ve got you covered!
For the holidays, I DIY’d the most amazing sugar scrub and handed them out in luxurious little jars. Made with sugar (of course), ginger, grapefruit, and peppermint, the feel and smell of the scrub was heavenly. I even had people calling me asking for more!
This body scrub is one I’d personally spend $20 for if I found in the store, but guess what? I’m hooking you up with the recipe below, and I’m including some other must-have DIY Skin Care hacks for you to try along with it!
Homemade Eye Makeup Remover: Use your favorite oil, like olive oil or almond oil, generously pour on a cotton ball, and gently dab at your eyes. Then, don’t wash your hands. Simply rub the remaining oil on your cuticles and on the backs of your hands for super-smooth skin.
Homemade Coffee Facial Scrub: Removing dull, dead skin while increasing circulation because of the caffeine, this facial scrub is a go-to item for me. And, super easy to make up in your kitchen.
- Mix ½ cup coffee grounds and ½ cup brown sugar with almond oil or fractionated coconut oil.
- Add 3 to 5 drops of peppermint oil and mix; gently apply to your face for a little pick-me-up on your skin.
Homemade Facial Toner: Head to your pantry and grab the apple cider vinegar. It naturally dissolves dead skin, lightens age spots, improves acne, and has alpha hydroxy acids (a natural exfoliator). Mix it with equal parts water (or a little more if you have sensitive skin) and voila…instant toner! (I like to mix my toner with a little tea tree oil to help reduce inflammation, too.)
Homemade Face Cream: Skin care doesn’t have to be super expensive to be really nourishing for your skin. The key is to layer the ingredients, starting with a serum, then a moisturizer, then an oil. If you have a serum you love, keep using it, but add in some nourishing oil as your top layer, like argan oil. Frankly, I buy a large bottle of argan oil and use it regularly on my face and in my hair.
MORE Homemade Face Cream: I personally love to use serums like hyaluronic acid, retinol, and Vitamin C. On top of the facial serums, I just add a simple moisturizer from the drugstore like Ponds. Then, I add in my number one go-to in skincare, Yarrow Pom oil from DoTERRA. That oil can be pretty costly, but if you’re an essential oil lover, I highly recommend this product.
Homemade Body Scrub: Behold, the amazing body scrub recipe! This scrub is just overall rejuvenating—the feel, the smell…the feel. And if I’m being honest here, I also use it as a facial scrub. It’s gentle enough for the entire body. It’s so good, you could eat it! To make it, mix all of the ingredients, the put in an air-tight glass jar to store in your shower. (This recipe won’t last long, so I suggest you double it!)
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup fractionated coconut oil
- 20 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 20 drops ginger essential oil
- 10 drops peppermint oil
- 3 drops vitamin E oil
I highly suggest using high-grade essential oils. I personally use DoTERRA oils, but there are others that are just as good. If you don’t feel comfortable putting the oil in your mouth, I wouldn’t feel comfortable using it in scrub or cream. Make sure you know the product you’re getting.
One last homemade skin care hack I have to tell you about. You can find many great brands of skin care products from cleansers to moisturizers to makeup at discount stores like Home Goods and Ross.
