Teachers are Unicorns :: My Thoughts on the Virtual Kindergarten Experience

To my son’s Kindergarten teacher,

You are a noticer. A noticer is defined as someone who sees or points out something in life that most would miss—the seemingly little things painting the big picture that ultimately becomes your life. All those little moments in tiles were my son’s Kinder experience.

Thank you for noticing that he got a hair cut during asynchronous learning. The fact that, in a sea of five- and six-year-olds in squares the size of matchbooks, you noticed a hair trim is beyond me. But it’s who you are. It’s the teacher you have proven day after day and week after week to be.

His first day was brutal for me to watch as it was so vastly different from the Kindergarten experience I thought he would have.

But I was wrong.Photo by Julia M Cameron from Pexels

I know that noticing when a child needs a brain break from a mile away through a screen is not something you trained for.

I think I overheard you say the words mute button about a thousand times in nine weeks, but you always kept your cool and found patience even in the midst of what sounded like chaos.

But it was not chaos for you.

At least you never made it appear to be.

It was your chance to teach.

From downstairs I’d sometimes catch a glimpse of what he was working on. Every sentence was a lesson and every child was listening. I was in awe of your ways and even on what probably were your most challenges days as a teaching professional, you showed up and gave all these little pieces that fit together so perfectly to make my son’s Kindergarten experience this beautiful, at-home memory for us.

I’ll never be able to thank you enough for what you did for him, the courage it took to lean in and be so open to learning and teaching in this brave new world.

But from my heart right to yours, thank you!
