Earlier this month I shared a quote on the importance of diversifying our social circles over on my IG account that really resonated with my community. It came out of a conversation a good friend of mine and I were having about cross-racial friendships. This idea that, as moms, we can be so focused on creating diversity for our kids’ friendships that we miss out on experiencing that for ourselves in our own social circles.

Diversifying your social media feed can be a good place to start. There are some pretty incredible moms out there in the social media sphere contributing amazing things into the world who may not look like you. Here are nine Black mom Instagram accounts that you should definitely follow right now:
Amiyrah Martin | Frugal & Fab
Amiyrah is all about teaching moms how to “live full lives on less” through her frugal yet fab tips. She is a homeschooling mom of three, a fashion lover, a Star Wars fan aficionado, and a self-proclaimed Disney nerd. In addition to her blog, she also shares frugal tips and fashion finds on her IG stories and over on her YouTube channel (new videos every Wednesday). Her daily coffee songs and coffee mug selections are my favorites! Amiyrah has been seen on GMA, CNN, Dr. Oz, StarWars.com, ABC News, and most recently, the Winter 2020 edition of The Pioneer Woman Magazine.
Dana | Chanel Connect
Dana is your one-stop-shop for all things family, food, and fun in DFW. She knows all the hot spots and the hidden gems, so if you are new to the area or have been here for years but want to be a tourist in your hometown, Dana is your girl. For all you boy moms out there, check out Dana’s IG stories for all the son-shine relatable content you can handle.
Jessica Shepherd, MD MBA FACOG
Dr. Jessica is a board-certified OB/GYN who has taken her passion for women’s health beyond her medical office. Mom of two, Dr. Jessica is all about empowering women and being an advocate for women’s health. Founder of Sanctum Med + Wellness, a complete women’s health center in Dallas, she has shared her expertise on the Today Show, CNN, Dr. Oz, The Talk, ABC, and is a Media Health Expert on GMA. Her IG lives/reels on women’s health topics, such as the importance of annual pap tests and uterine fibroid education and awareness, are informative and insightful.
Morgan Harper Nichols
Morgan was the IG account that we all didn’t know we needed in 2020! Her spoken word resonated and carried us (all 1.6 million of us) through the twists and turns of last year. Artist, poet, singer, songwriter, author, social justice advocate, mom—she does it all with much passion, grace, and humility. Her beautiful artwork and spoken word are a wonderful respite on my IG feed. Brandi | Own Your Fancy
Brandi is your go-to travel expert…yes, even in a pandemic. She shows us how to pivot and travel safely and smartly during this time. A “Detroit girl living in Houston” and mom of two, Brandi shares her love for all things family, travel, and shows us how to add a little fancy into our everyday!
Porshia | Wellness & Motherhood
Porshia is living her BEST life and showing us moms how to do the same. She shares tips on motherhood and homemaking from a wellness/holistic perspective. Porshia shows how a simple life can be maintained in the every day with small acts and lots of intention.
Kaanji Irby | Community Builder
Diversity & inclusion leader, nonprofit executive director, podcast host, speaker, lawyer, and boy mom—Kaanji is a mom on a mission to bridge the racial empathy gap and make a long-lasting impact for her sons’ generation and generations to come through education and community building. Leyann | The Mommy Monologue
Leyann is a Dallas mom who is showing moms that “having It all isn’t always having it all together”. Her blog “The Mommy Monologue” is a safe space she created to share her fears, struggles, and joys with motherhood, something all of us moms can definitely relate to regardless of what stage we are in our motherhood journeys. Leyann also shares her experiences in being in an interracial marriage, raising biracial children, how she and her husband tackled their debt, and her love of Beyonce and street tacos!
Jennifer Borget | Cherish 365
Jennifer is a mom of three, storyteller, and creator, whose goal is to create “meaningful memories with my family and inspiring others to cherish every day”. Besides her family, her passions are writing, photography, and making videos about her life experiences as a millennial mom. She also shares her experiences being in an interracial marriage and racing biracial children. Her monthly #cherisheveryday365 IG community photo project is such an inspired way to capture the memories of the year and connect with others in her community.
I hope that as you visit these fellow moms’ accounts, you see some of yourself through their experiences. Even though we come from diverse races and backgrounds, there are many aspects of our collective motherhood journey that looks the same. The aspects of the journey that are different give us an opportunity to widen our viewpoints and perspectives and enrich our lives in a more meaningful way.
