This year, the start of the school year came with a few extra uncertainties for my oldest daughter. Her sixth grade year had been full of transitions as we moved back to Texas from Iowa. So, as she started her seventh grade year, we were nervous how starting at another new school would pan out, and if she had lost any information or maybe missed something along the way. Her first report card revealed that math was still a bit of a struggle. When I heard about Explore Horizons, I went directly to the website and felt like it might be a helpful tool for supplemental education. They even had a Prep for Middle School package, which is exactly what I felt like my daughter could really benefit from.
The first phone consultation gave me great relief. I felt like they knew what they were doing; I loved that they were coordinating with Texas and local district expectations. I didn’t want her to feel like she would be learning ‘another, different’ way, but instead, they were going to come alongside her and help her where she was, which is exactly what I knew she needed.
We arrived for the first session a little apprehensive.
Normally, these interactions make me very nervous, and my daughter as well, but we both felt quite at ease upon arriving for our first interaction with Explore Horizons. Not only did they welcome my daughter and me, but they greeted my two youngest children, showed them to the ‘Recharge Zone’ and played games with them so I could be engaged and focused on my oldest daughter.
While I was filling out paperwork and looking through information about the center, my daughter was led through expectations, goal setting, and what she could expect to gain from the center. The woman we worked with was one of the nicest people I have ever met, she treated my daughter with such great respect and was so affirming of the things my daughter had to say, her hardships, fears, and her own personal goals. My daughter and I left feeling so supported in her endeavors and with a new excitement for her education and how much she could benefit from this supplemental learning tool!
