What Is Pride Month?
Pride Month is celebrated each June to mark the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, a major turning point in the Gay Liberation Movement. What was originally coined “Gay Pride Day” soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events around the U.S.
Today, LGBTQ Pride Month events include parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia, concerts, and memorials for LGBTQIA+ members of our community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. We celebrate Pride to acknowledge the impact that queer folks have had on our rich history not only locally, but nationally and internationally.
