I read something this morning that really has stuck with me and keeps popping into my head. It basically said,
“If the mundane/routine, those little tasks we do every day, sometimes multiple times a day, were taken away from us, so would all of those special blessings and goodness and best parts of our lives.”
These small tasks that we may curse and detest or are just plain bored with, actually give us some of our greatest joys. They give us the reason for doing them. They give us our reason, out biggest reasons for everything.
How to Appreciate the Mundane
– If we didn’t have chores in the house, the laundry and the toilet tasks, we wouldn’t have the comfort of home and shelter and our special place to call ours.
– If we didn’t have to cook the food and clean the dishes and plan the meals, it means we wouldn’t have the food that nourishes us and the stores/apps/paper to assist in meal planning and shopping that helps us manage the chaos.
– If we didn’t have to sit behind the desk, or stare at the computer, or answer the phones, then we wouldn’t have the career we worked hard for that also provides for our family.
-If we didn’t have to get everyone up and dressed and fed and out of the door only do the same thing on the other end of the day, we wouldn’t have those little people who we do everything for. The whole reason we do the “mundane” is for our kids.
That last one really has been weighing on me today. It is so easy to sit and feel grateful for what you have when you have a second to yourself! But in those super hard and exhausting moments it is not as easy. As parents we do anything and everything for our kids, even though they are unaware of 97% of it.
So remember in those moments of putting the 15th pair of pants on, looking for that other shoe, flipping those pancakes, emptying the dishwasher, sending that email, hooking little people into carseats, and every other so small, but oh so meaningful task, remember that these simple, everyday, repetitive things allow us to have our biggest joys and most meaningful treasures.
