I love thrifting! There’s something about the thrill of the chase and not knowing what treasures you might find. However, I’m also aware that thrift stores can be overwhelming. If you’re not sure what to look for, you can miss out on hidden gems. I’ve made a list of some of my favorite items to shop for at thrift stores. I’ve also included pictures of items I love that I’ve found locally.
My Top 10 Favorite Items to Thrift
1. Baskets/Trays
To say I’m obsessed with baskets and trays would be an understatement. I use them for practically everything in my house. Clutter isn’t clutter if it’s in a basket, right? These are a few baskets and trays I’ve scored while thrifting that I use around the house:
2. Candle Holders and Faux Candles
Thrift stores are the best places to look for unique and vintage candle holders. It’s also a safe bet to assume they will have fake candles for less than half the cost of what you would pay elsewhere. These are a few candle holders and faux candles that I found at thrift stores:
3. Picture Frames
If you’re in the market for unique picture frames to display photos around your house, thrifting should be your first stop. Most thrift stores have dozens of picture frames. I love this solid wood one! (I also purchased the shelf at a thrift store).
4. Seasonal Dishes and Cookware
I love checking out the dish section to search for seasonal bowls/saucers for charcuterie boards and spreads. I found this Christmas tree dish and this star-shaped dish (perfect for the Fourth of July) for $1. Or if you’re on the hunt for something specific (like a butter dish or gravy boat), you’re sure to find one at a thrift store (likely for $1).
5. Kids’ Shoes & Clothes
You HAVE to check out the kids’ clothing and shoe section at your local thrift store! I find very gently used name brand shoes and clothes every time I visit. I’ve bought tons of like-new shoes and clothing in name brands such as Vans, Converse, Toms, Natives, Crocs, Columbia, and Levi’s. Check out the price on those pink Vans: $4!
6. Vintage Decor/Pictures
If you’re looking for unique decor, you’re sure to find it at your local thrift. Sometimes you have to do some digging, but I promise it’s worth it. I love this unique picture we have in our laundry room:
7. Kids’ Books
Thrift stores always have TONS of books. Sometimes paperbacks are as cheap as 25 cents. I always keep an eye out for vintage or seasonal books for my kids.
8. Toys
Thrift stores are like a gold mine when it comes to toys. Not only can you find like-new items, but they also have vintage toys you can no longer find in stores. I’m always on the hunt for wooden toys, and I’ve found many at our local thrift shops. Check out this full-sized Tonka truck! And how cute is this wooden baby bed?
9. Maternity Clothes
If you’re expecting or know someone who is, please check out the maternity section! They have such a great selection of all sizes in name brands.
10. Hats/Bags/Pajamas
Of course, you can find great deals on women’s clothing at thrift stores, but I especially love to look for things like hats, bags, and pajamas.
It’s true that thrifting can be overwhelming if you’re not sure what to look for, but if you go in with a plan, you’re bound to find something special. I hope this list inspires you to buy secondhand. While we’re on topic, check out this awesome comprehensive list of thrift stores in Collin county by my friend, Lauren Escobedo.
