My oldest is just finishing up Kindergarten, and the amount she has learned this year, the progress she has made… mind=blown. She comes home using words like onomatopoeia and oviparous and I’m thinking: 1) her public kinder is way more academic than mine ever was, and 2) I don’t want her to lose any of this knowledge over the long summer!
- summer slide – noun; the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of the summer, i.e., not good.
Here’s what Explore Horizons has to say about it:
Research has shown that nearly two-thirds of children fall behind in their studies over the summer break. By the end of the summer vacation, students perform at least two months behind their end-of-semester scores. It has been found that just 2-3 hours of subject-focused learning per week during the summer vacation is all it takes to prevent summer learning loss.
Basically, as we plan out summer schedules over the next couple months, we also want to be asking, “Where does summer learning come in?” Then we pat ourselves on the back for being such conscientious parents. Lucky for us, Explore Horizons is all over it when it comes to academic wellness all year long. They have a summer learning program designed to keep kids academically focused enough to walk back into school with confidence in the fall. Want to know more?
APRIL 25, 2018, is a FREE “Seize the Summer” Community Workshop at each of their 5 locations.

I’ve talked about Explore Horizons before, and I honestly can’t say enough good things about them. You hear “tutoring center” and you think of cookie-cutter chains or something kind of sterilized and rote (at least I do). Explore Horizons doesn’t work like that. They tailor their programs to Texas curricula, and each center builds its culture around the local community. Kids love it and don’t want to leave! Here’s what you need to know about the summer learning program:
- Same flexible, drop-in style they always offer, so you can do pool time, day camps, and all that other fun stuff during the day.
- Obviously great for kids playing catch up over the summer, but summer learning benefits all students—staying strong is the way to go.
- Same warm, relaxed environment, but they switch things up to be extra summer-friendly so it’s not a drag.
- Did someone say promotional period? They are waiving new member fees from May 8 – June 14, 2018!
- If you can’t make it on April 25, there is a Family Open House on June 6, 2018. Come check it out and see what’s what!
