If your crew is anything like mine, summer is the time we like to get the heck out of town! One of our very favorite drivable spots is the beautiful town of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Just over four hours away from Collin County, Hot Springs is a gorgeous place for lake lovers, hikers, and those who love a bit of nostalgia. This is a place where time stands almost completely still, and we love it for that very reason. My dad grew up here, and I’ve visited our family lake house on Lake Hamilton multiple times every summer since birth. So you might say I’m just a bit of an expert on this highly underrated spot!
Tips on Travel to Hot Springs
Where to Stay in Hot Springs
My top pick for where to stay will always be a rental property on Lake Hamilton. It’s just too pretty to miss out on the lake views! (There are also lots of rental options in town if the lake isn’t your thing.) If you prefer a hotel, the Long Island Lake Resort has lots of charm, gorgeous views, and a fantastic location. And when you’re ready to get out on the lake, check out boat rentals from Hot Springs Marina or Gregg Orr Marine.
If you’re a camper or have an RV, there are lots of options for you at nearby Lake Catherine State Park, too.
Non-Lake Things to Do with Kids in Hot Springs
Garvan Woodland Gardens
Garvan Gardens are located on Lake Hamilton and feature miles of beautiful walking trails, koi ponds, and a stunning chapel. The gardens are maintained by The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and there are tons of educational opportunities sprinkled throughout. They are open seven days a week and offer a stunning Christmas light show in the winter! Pro tip: my favorite months of the year to visit are April, May, October, and early November!
Hot Springs National Park and Mountain Tower
Drive up the wind-y, one-way road into the national park and make a stop at the tower! The elevator will take you to the very top deck where you can see 360-degree views of the area for miles. The gift shop at the tower’s base is also much better than the downtown souvenir shops, in my opinion.
Mid-America Science Museum
This is a great spot for a rainy or hot day with your kids. This museum features exhibits on light, motion, dinosaurs, and more. All ages can have a blast here. Heck, even my 70-something dad enjoyed our afternoon here!
Magic Springs
Though this is certainly no Six Flags, we love the smaller feel (and price!) of this theme and water park. We also love that the two parks are combined, so we can cool off in the water after some summer roller coaster riding.
Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf
On a cool morning or around sunset, we love to take our crew out for a little old school putt-putt at Pirate’s Cove. With two different 18-hole courses available, there’s rarely a long wait behind other groups, even at peak times. The unique amenities like a pirate’s ship, old-school jail, and waterfall make this course extra fun.
Lake Catherine State Park
If you make the trip in the spring or fall, definitely don’t miss out on the beautiful hiking trails available at Lake Catherine. Our favorite is the Falls Branch trail (about two miles and easy enough for our kids over five to hang with us!) that winds through some hills and takes you to a beautiful waterfall where the kids can put their feet in!
Places to Eat in Hot Springs
Grateful Head
Unbeknownst to many, this beloved Hochatown, Oklahoma, favorite has a second location in none other than downtown Hot Springs! Great for families, but go early to avoid the wait.
Luna Bella
For a great date night option, Luna Bella is a top pick by many for pasta, steak, or seafood. They also have the most extensive drink menu I’ve seen in town!
Rocky’s Corner Pizza
Full disclosure, this place is the actual definition of a dive. But it’s also some of the best pizza I’ve ever had and the very first place our kids beg to get food from when we arrive. Grab it to go or get it delivered and eat it on a porch, preferably with a lake view.
The Waters Hotel Rooftop Bar
This is a great spot if you’re on an actual vacation…you know, kid-free?! Grab a drink and some apps and enjoy sunset or do some people watching over Central Avenue.
The Pancake Shop
Ready to be transported back in time? The infamous Pancake Shop on Central Avenue has literally not changed in half a century. I mean, don’t quote me on that, but I’m pretty sure it looks exactly the same as when my dad ate there as a kid in the 1950s. Shocker? I recommend the pancakes.
Bubba Brew’s
If you find yourself on or near the lake at sunset, make a stop at Bubba Brew’s for a good drink and some gorgeous patio time. The menu is pretty extensive with traditional bar food, sandwiches, pizza, and even a touch of seafood.
If you have traveled to Hot Springs lately, I’d love to hear what you thought! Share a favorite activity or restaurant in the comments because I’m always looking for new places!
