Rocky Creek Candle Company has long been a fun (and unique!) option for a day date or a girls’ night out, but what does a child think about the whole experience? Is it good for kids?
I recently brought my fifth grader with me to experience the candle creation process, and SHE LOVED IT. I want to share a rundown of the process and what we thought, because we had no idea what to expect. You may be curious, too?
Step 1:
Pick your vessel. We made a scented candle, but you can do all sorts of stuff: hand sanitizer, wax tarts, soaps, diffusers. My daughter repeatedly expressed interest in coming back to make room spray. As for candles, there are lots of containers to choose from. We went for a shimmery gold to match her room, but I confess, the golden-hour light hitting these jewel ones . . . almost irresistible.
Step 2:
The scents! This part was so fun. They have more than 80 different scents, including a selection of seasonal options. You go along the rows, smelling samples, and writing down your top 10 choices. No need to finalize just yet; simply jot down any that you like. Please find the Baked Bread one and tell me that doesn’t smell exactly like baked bread!!
Step 3:
Head to your workstation. They’ll bring you a bottle of every scent on your list so you can begin to narrow things down. Be sure to try two at once to get an idea of possible scent combinations — Caramel + Honey Crisp would be a nice fall combo, for example. To help with scent overload, there are containers of coffee beans throughout the shop to cleanse the palate, so to speak. Of course, we had to find the Coffee Bean candle and compare it to the actual beans. How could you not?
My daughter ended up going with Campfire + Aspen Woods. Quite a mature combination, if I do say so myself. (I was expecting Hot Chocolate or Pink Sugar or something cookie adjacent. You know how these things go.)
Step 4:
Get busy making. I should mention that you’ll be guided through the process every step of the way. Scent specialists give you instructions before each step, then leave you to go at your own pace. Don’t worry about messing up; you won’t. And if you want to bring younger kids, there’s even an option for them! Sand wax candles are made by scooping different colors of “sand” and layering them into jars. No hot wax involved.
Once your candle is finished, it has to set up for at least 90 minutes. You can leave and come back another time to pick it up, but it’s also a good opportunity to walk around Fariview Town Center, have a meal, or catch a movie at iPic, which is directly opposite Rocky Creek.
Final Thoughts:
This was a perfect parent-child date. My daughter had a blast, said she wants to have her birthday here, and can’t wait to return. And I love supporting a local, family-owned small business. You’ll likely find the owner there when you visit!
