Over the past several months, I’ve really struggled with my kids and YouTube. I get so overwhelmed with “screening” channels, letting them watch, the requests for “one more video,” seeing less-desirable behaviors or attitudes they see in virtual life play out in real life. Finally, we decided to cut down our YouTube channel viewing to a just a few specific channels. Not many made the cut, but there’s one we all agreed on.
One YouTube Channel That’s Good for Kids
As a family, we love watching Dude Perfect. It’s a little bit sentimental to me because my kids really found it and got into it right around the beginning of the pandemic. We were all home together and it was something we really enjoyed doing in such an uncertain time. They watched video after video, and I remember them being so excited to watch the Dude Perfect documentary that came out on their YouTube channel a couple of months into all the COVID craziness. Did you know that they live right in our backyard? Their headquarters is located in Frisco, and one of the things my kids like doing is trying to figure out where they might have filmed a specific video.
After cutting off most of YouTube for my kids (for now), why do I let Dude Perfect stay?
They are family friendly.
I know that I can leave the room while my kids are watching a Dude Perfect video and not worry about anything concerning coming up. There is no swearing, no violence, no name calling, nothing. These guys all have families and kids of their own, and I love seeing that influence in their videos and the positive effect it can have on my kids.
There is a little bit of something for everyone.
While they started out with trick shots (and they still do plenty of those), they have added all different kinds of videos. My kids love the variety. Whether it’s their funny stereotype videos, battles, or episodes of their show “Overtime,” there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
They know who they are and what their values are.
Dude Perfect is not shy about their faith, and it shows in their videos. It isn’t displayed in an overt way, and it’s not mentioned in most of their videos, but they don’t hide the positive effect it has on their lives. Whether you are a religious person or not, this commitment to your own chosen values and beliefs is something by which anyone can be inspired.
All of their videos promote innovation and creativity.
I love how their videos inspire my kids to try new things, see ordinary objects in a different way, and use their own creativity to try something cool!
In December 2020, we surprised our kids with tickets to the Dude Perfect live show in July 2021. Like so many things, it was delayed a few months. But we finally got to see them, and my kids had the time of their lives! I’ll admit, there were times I got a little emotional watching thousands of screaming kids have so much fun in such a positive and uplifting atmosphere. I highly recommend checking out the 2022 Dude Perfect tour if you’re on the search for a fun summer treat.
Good-quality media with a postive influence for kids can be difficult to find these days. So, if you’re looking for a YouTube channel that will appeal to most everyone in your family and leave you feeling happy and uplifted, Dude Perfect is an excellent (and local!) option.
