“Are You New Here?” – Tips For Welcoming New Moms

My first baby ended up having to stay in the hospital for seven days after her birth. While not lengthy, it was an unexpected stay. As a result, my transition to motherhood went a little differently than I planned. The coming weeks were lonely and isolating at times as I navigated my new environment. Additionally, since becoming a mom, my family moved a few times. This resulted in similar feelings as I learned more about my new surroundings.

Entering an unfamiliar environment can be overwhelming and sometimes lonely. This is true whether you are “a new mom” within an infant or “the new mom” in the neighborhood. Having been in and known those in both situations, I’ve found that there are a few things that can be welcoming and comforting to most any “new mom” situation.

A Good Friend

A good friend is worth their weight in gold. Be mindful of those who may have new babies at home. Try to recognize when there is a new mom in your neighborhood, at the library or at the playground. Chances are they are wondering how they will fit into their new world. Most will probably not turn down the chance to make a new friend. Send texts asking how they are doing or drop off a treat in the middle of the week to encourage them. Or simply be there as a listening ear.

A Good Conversation

Speaking of a listening ear, chances are most new moms won’t pass up the chance for a good conversation. A heartfelt chat can clear the mind and uplift through sometimes lonely transitions. This is true whether it breaks up the sometimes monotonous newborn routine or is simply to find out the location of the nearest Target.

A Good Meal

A good meal is the cure for many things. Offering a well-balanced meal to a new mom who might have forgotten to eat lunch or one who has had bare cupboards since moving day will surely lift their spirits. One of my favorite meals to take in are these Baked Chicken Taquitos. They can be made and frozen to have on hand whenever you see a need to take in a meal. If you invite a new mom into your home for a meal, this Broiled Parmesan and Lemon Chicken is an easy crowd pleaser.

A Good Rest

On par with a good meal is a good rest. Any new mom, whether sleep-deprived from late night feedings or late night unpacking sessions, would most likely welcome a good rest. Offering to watch their baby or other children for a couple of hours can bring welcome relief to the mom looking for any spare moment of sleep.

We all want and need mom friends in our corner. Try a few of these suggestions they next time you see a need to welcome a new mom to your circle.

What have others done to welcome you? What have you done for others?

  1. I love these ideas, especially the ones about a good friend and conversation. It’s easy to get into my own busy routine and sometimes I forget to look around and notice someone who needs a friend. Thanks for the reminder!!
